Anger and pain brought them together, but their passion might just set them free.

Dimitri wants only one thing: revenge. His stepfather, Hendrix, has caused him nothing but pain and heartache. At last Dimitri can take something—someone—important to Hendrix and make him pay: Jess.

Jess is feisty and strong headed. Her past haunts her and connects her to the dangerously dark Dimitri in an unexpected way. Dimitri keeps his secrets locked deep inside, and Jess is drawn to this broken man like no one before.

With little to cling to besides their haunting pasts, both could have been doomed to lives spent raging against the darkness that holds them prisoner. Instead, it seems that as their pain draws them closer together, it is their desire that will set them free.

I’ve waited for this book ever since I read the first one. I love pirates, so I knew right away that I was going to like this series. Unlike other historical romances where the heroes were pirates, this series from Bella Jewel is all about the modern world. I difficult to imagine modern day pirates, but the author was able to create an imaginary world where pirates still ruled the seas.

This book starts right where the first book ends, with Dimitri kidnapping Jess as a step in getting revenge against Hendrix, the first book’s hero and Dimitri’s former step father. For a decade, he was fueled with hatred, thinking that Dimitri abandoned him and killed his mother. That was very far from the truth, as a matter of fact. Jess was someone Hendrix saved and took in. There was nothing romantic between them, but they loved each other like real family. Jess looked up to Hendrix and he, in turn, was protective of her.

I really liked this book because it was dark, sexy and action-packed. It was dark because Jess was the victim of Dimitri’s kidnapping. However, because she has seen worse and has been aboard a ship with pirates for a while, this kidnapping does not faze her at all. She remained strong and positive. Dimitri was this dark hero who was full of anger and hatred. Still, we can’t help but sympathize with him because we all know what he went through. He was raped, beaten, left alone to fend for himself.

It was sexy. Jess and Dimitri together were all sorts of hot. Even if bother of them were victims of sexual abuse, the steaminess of their sex scenes were never dull or boring. It was action packed. The fight scenes where Dimitri spent a lot of this time getting information, the scenes of confrontation between Dimitri and Hendrix, and the scenes when Jess was held captive by her foster father, forced into a life of underground fighting.

Another reason why I liked this book was that it provided closure for both Dimitri and Hendrix. Their relationship was now healed, and all of them are now able to move forward. There’s no cliffhanger anymore. There is a a third book that’s scheduled for release next year. However, these first two books are now closed. I like that Bella Jewel has taken the concept of modern day pirates into a series of sexy, adventure novels that highly entertain her readers.
