Title: Hawke (Cold Fury, Book #5)

Author: Sawyer Bennett

Release Date: March 15, 2016

Synopsis: The New York Times bestselling hockey series featuring the Carolina Cold Fury continues as the team’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away. Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut. Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Review

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book’s blog tour promotions.

I’m one of those who’ve followed this series since book 1. When I read Alex, I didn’t really fall in love with the book. I thought it was a good solid read, but it lacked that x factor that other books had, the ones that I super loved. However, when Garrett was released, I decided to check it out too, and I loved it. I loved it even more when I read Zack. And Ryker’s story was also something that I truly enjoyed. And while some people say that Ryker wasn’t as good as the first three, I personally found him to be my favorite hero in the series.

I was excited to read Hawke because it’s a second chance romance, which happens to be my favorite trope. I truly enjoyed this book. Of course, I still say Ryker is my favorite hero, but Hawke’s story is as real as they come. Hawke and Vale fell in love when they were young. It was the kind of love that does happen to everybody. However, they both needed a lot of time to grow and mature. They had the right love at the wrong time, as Barry Manilow would say.

Now, several years later, they have another shot at that love, but they’ve been through many things apart. They are changed people now. In these kinds of stories, the question is always whether both parties are willing it give it another try, whether they both can forgive the past and take another chance on the future. I really enjoyed reading this book. Both Hawke and Vale frustrated me at times, but I guess that’s how real life is like anyway.
