Synopsis

Life on the run with an assassin hasn’t been what Ranay thought it would be. In fact, parts of it more closely resemble a sex-fueled vacation—until duty calls. The FBI believe Charlie’s brother is working for a human trafficking ring, and Charlie is the only one who can bring him down.

Charlie fears Vincent has become a murderous monster like their father. He owes a mercy to the brother he remembers, the one who’d never want to be an uncontrollable killer. But Charlie has never had to kill someone he loves. Not even to save them from a dark, inherited curse.

Killing his brother might be enough to push him over the edge.

Enough to ruin everything he’s built with Ranay.

As a bodyguard for the Vlasenko bratva, the very cruelest arm of the Russian mob, Vincent Gyres has seen and survived the worst the world has to offer. Former Special Forces, ex-CIA and a past inmate at Russia’s most brutal prison, he’s earned his reputation. They call him Ghost because he’s already dead inside.

Madison “Mads” Archer’s hatred for scumbags who traffic in human lives is personal—her sister was taken when the girls were just children. Now Madison’s on a joint FBI task force, deep undercover as a sex slave. It’s a small price to pay to see the Vlasenko bratva taken down.

A violent criminal like Vincent Gyres doesn’t make a trustworthy ally, regardless of his CIA background. But Mads will use anyone and anything to stop the taking of another innocent young girl’s life. Vincent’s invitation to her to play his submissive in order to get closer to the leader isn’t the problem. Trusting him, wanting him…loving him is.

Review

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I loved One Cut Deeper. Like a lot. I love how Ms. Burkhart took me on a thrilling ride. It wasn’t even about the BDSM. It wasn’t the hot, explicit sex scenes. It was the emotions that those scenes brought out. The knife play, the domination, the uncertainty, the suspense, the mystery, the action, and most of all, the romance. I loved how Charlie and Ranay established their relationship, and I love the things Charlie did for her, even if he was a lot scary and was a man she shouldn’t dabble with.

This book, though? It was twice as amazing. That’s probably because we don’t just have Ranay and Charlie and their norm-defying bond. We now also have Charlie’s brother, Vincent, and Madison. Vincent was working undercover for one of the most dangerous and crueles Russian bratva. Madison was and FBI agent who hated human trafficking with a passion. Their connection was in a way similar but still very different from Ranay and Charlie.

Both Gyres men were dominant to a point. But where one was a sadist, the other was a masochist. I couldn’t put the book down because I was very excited to know what happens to the brothers. I couldn’t wait to find out if there was a happy ending for either of them with their women. This was very thrilling and suspenseful. There was violence. There was sex, lots of it actually. But once again, it wasn’t about what was happening in the book that made it so riveting. It was the feelings that the author wanted you to feel with each scene. I truly loved this book. I can’t wait for more books from Ms. Burkhart.

Review

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Ever since the first book I wrote from Joely Sue Burkhart, I was already a big fan. I like her BDSM romances because they all have that edgy and suspenseful atmosphere that keeps me on my toes and keeps me guessing what’s going to happen next. When I was offered to review Here Be Magic, which contains one of her stories, Nightgazer, I was all on board.

I haven’t read anything paranormal from her, so this is a first for me. Nevertheless, I knew I was right about her being a wonderful writer. Nightgazer was able to execute a good world building despite the fact that it’s only a novella. I don’t always see that on short books, but Nightgazer is one of those stories that hooked me into its world in just a few pages.

Being that this book is an anthology, I won’t focus too much on Nightgazer alone because there are other stories in the book that I quite enjoyed. There were some stories that didn’t work that well for me, but overall, Here Be Magic contains a story for everyone. I mean, each reader will surely find at least one favorite. Even if you don’t always read PNR, I still suggest you check out this book because the novellas inside will certainly keep you entertained.

Review

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Do you know any book that’s sexy, kinky, and arousing without being to explicit on sex scenes and without all the dirty talk and filthy words coming out from the main characters’ mouths? There are only a few of them like that. Joely Sue Burkhart writes those types of books. My first book from her was One Cut Deeper, and while that book felt eerily like a book I’ve already read, I loved the hell out of it. The suspense, kink, and romance were all well-balanced, and the characters were all complex and unpredictable.

This book is for all you readers who adore femdomme. The story wasn’t really written for kink alone. This isn’t just about hot sex and BDSM. Individually, both main characters were richly written. They had their own back story that had nothing to do with each other. The hero was your tragic prince who became a recluse after a heartbreaking tragedy. The heroine was the one who brought down his walls. It’s basically a beauty and the beast fiction that’s hotter and kinkier.

I’m a big fan of this author, so I know that whatever BDSM story she comes up with will always have emotional content as well as the mind games and thrill that are missing on a lot of BDSM books. I will surely be looking out for more books from her.

Synopsis

Her needs are dark. His are dangerous.

Charlie MacNiall has been bringing his beautiful king shepherd to the vet clinic where Ranay Killian works for the better part of a year. She doesn’t realize he’s been slowly wooing her. She certainly has no idea that he picked her deliberately—that she is to become his. A broken heart and a desperate desire to be dominated make her the perfect victim.

His perfect victim.

Charlie fixes Ranay, testing her emotional limits while pushing her sexual boundaries past anything she’d imagined possible. Pain is their shared pleasure…until Charlie disappears and Ranay is all but destroyed.

The FBI says the man she loves is a serial killer. Ranay can’t deny there’s a darkness in Charlie, a monstrous hunger that drives him to the brink. She even believes he could kill. But Charlie’s hunger is what bonds them—it’s the foundation of their love. Would he actually kill her?

Review

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was really hesitant to read this book. When I read the blurb, it seemed interesting, so I requested access. After a couple of weeks, I still haven’t touched it because I was afraid it might be too much and too dark for me. Eventually, I gathered enough courage to open my digital copy and start reading.

Best decision ever. I don’t really know how to review this book and give it justice. I just have to say that this book blew my mind. It was dark, edgy, thrilling, and dangerous. The heroine was a masochist who started out as a lost woman, trying to move on from a bad breakup. The hero was a normal man who hid a monstrous personality.

The sex scenes, while they were not pornographic and not focused on the actual sex, were all intense. Ms. Burkhart did an exceptional job in writing the scenesc where readers could almost see themselves in the scene itself. Blood play, knife play, biting, pain, pleasure, everything was there. The scenes were scary and exciting, exactly how the heroine described them.

I love the suspense angle that was injected into the story. It elevated the book into another level. This book was more than just a BDSM romance novel. It was also more than just a romantic suspense novel where the hero gets to save the day and live happily ever after with the heroine. No. In this book, the hero is just as dangerous as your most dreaded killer.

Another thing I loved about this book was that it painted a good picture of the dynamics in a BDSM relationship, the trust, the openness. Even if I’m not in the lifestyle, I got to appreciate their relationship for what it was. The heroine and the hero balanced each other. The masochist with no limit trusted the hero and in turn, the hero who had the darkest urges trusted the heroine to know when enough is enough.

I have to be honest and say I have not read anything from this author before, although I have heard many great things. I am ashamed of that fact, but there it is. However, from what I just read, I am very sure I will be getting and reading more books from her, whether the old ones or her upcoming ones.

One Cut Deeper is a deeper, darker journey into BDSM and Joely Sue Burkhart was just the perfect author to write something like this. Again, amazing!
